How the simple invoice works
Each line is quantity × price. The subtotal is the sum of the lines. If you enter a tax rate, it is charged on every item: tax = subtotal × rate. Total = subtotal + tax. There are no discounts, deposits or per-item tax boxes here, which keeps the form short. For those, use the full invoice generator.

Worked example: a two-line invoice with 5% tax
- Photo editing: 3 hours × $40 = $120.00.
- Prints: 2 × $15 = $30.00.
- Subtotal: $150.00.
- Tax at 5% on everything: $7.50.
- Total: $157.50.
Common questions
What is the simplest way to make an invoice?
Write who it is from and to, give it a number and a date, list what you did with prices, add the total and say how to pay. This page does the adding up and gives you a PDF.
What can I leave out of a simple invoice?
For a small, one-off job you can leave out purchase order numbers, discounts, deposits, logos and long notes. Keep the parts in the table above.
How do I add tax on a simple invoice?
Type the tax rate. It is charged on every item. Leave it empty if you do not charge tax. If only some items are taxable, use the full invoice generator.
Do I need an invoice number?
Yes. A number that never repeats makes the invoice easy to find and match to a payment. Start at INV-0001 and count up.
When should I use the full invoice generator instead?
When you need tax on some items only, a discount, a deposit or earlier payments, a logo, or a signature.
Can I use this for a one-off job?
