| Regular pay | 800 |
| Overtime pay | 240 |
| Hours | 48 |
| Effective hourly rate | 21.67 |
Gross pay before tax. Overtime rules differ by place and contract. Works in any currency. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere.
How overtime pay is calculated
Regular pay = rate × regular hours. Overtime pay = rate × the overtime multiplier × overtime hours, where time and a half is a multiplier of 1.5. Double-time pay = rate × the double-time multiplier × double-time hours. Gross pay = regular + overtime + double time. Effective hourly rate = gross pay ÷ all hours worked. If you only know the total hours, the page can split them: hours above the weekly limit (40 is the usual US limit) are overtime. This is gross pay before tax.
| Hourly rate | Overtime rate | 8 overtime hours |
|---|---|---|
| $15.00 | $22.50 | $180.00 |
| $20.00 | $30.00 | $240.00 |
| $25.00 | $37.50 | $300.00 |
| $30.00 | $45.00 | $360.00 |
| $40.00 | $60.00 | $480.00 |
| Name | Multiplier | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Time and a half | 1.5 | Hours over 40 in a week under US federal rules, and many contracts |
| Double time | 2 | Some states for very long days, holidays, and many union contracts |
| Straight time | 1 | Hours that are not overtime |
Worked example: 48 hours in a week at $20 an hour
- Regular pay: 40 hours × $20 = $800.00.
- Overtime pay: 8 hours × $20 × 1.5 = $240.00.
- Gross pay: $1,040.00 for 48 hours, an effective rate of $21.67 an hour.
- If 2 of those hours were double time: the gross becomes $1,120.00, an effective $22.40 an hour.
Common questions
How do I calculate overtime pay?
Multiply the hourly rate by the overtime multiplier, usually 1.5, and by the overtime hours. Add that to the regular pay for the regular hours.
How many hours before overtime starts?
Under US federal rules, for non-exempt workers it is after 40 hours in a workweek. Some states and contracts also count daily hours, so check your own rules.
What is time and a half?
An hourly rate of one and a half times the regular rate. For a $20 worker that is $30 an hour.
What is double time?
Two times the regular rate. It applies in some states after very long days and in many union contracts, so it is a separate box here.
Why is the effective hourly rate higher than the base rate?
Because the overtime hours pay more, the average over all hours rises. It shows what an hour really costs.
Is this the amount that arrives in the bank?
No. It is gross pay before tax and other deductions.
