How it's calculated
Add tax: tax = subtotal × rate ÷ 100; total = subtotal + tax.
Remove tax: subtotal = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); tax = total − subtotal.
Find the rate: rate = (total − subtotal) ÷ subtotal × 100. Results are rounded to cents for money and up to three decimal places for the rate.

How do I calculate tax on a receipt?
Enter the receipt subtotal and the tax rate printed on the receipt. The calculator multiplies the subtotal by the rate, then adds the tax to show the total.
Can I remove tax from a receipt total?
Yes. Choose Remove tax, enter the total paid and the tax rate, and the calculator estimates the subtotal before tax and the tax included in the total.
Can I find the tax rate from a receipt?
Yes. Choose Find the rate, enter the subtotal and total, and the calculator shows the effective rate. This is a blended rate if different items had different tax treatment.
Does this calculator know my local sales tax rate?
No. Type the rate printed on your receipt or check your state and local tax authority. Rates can differ by location and by what you bought.
