# Roof Square Calculator

> A roofing square is 100 square feet. Type a roof area, measure one flat plane, or enter a footprint with its pitch, and the calculator gives the squares, the squares billed to the next tenth, the bundles with and without waste, and the price at your rate per square. 2,068 sq ft is 20.7 squares.

## How it works

Squares = roof area in square feet ÷ 100. For a flat plane, area = the two sides measured on the roof. From a footprint, area = footprint × the slope factor √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²). Billed squares round up to the next tenth. Bundles = squares × 3 (the usual pack), or squares × (1 + waste) × 3 when you add waste. Price = billed squares × your price per square. To go back, square feet = squares × 100.

**Square feet and roofing squares**

| Square feet | Squares | Bundles at 3 per square |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 500 | 5 | 15 |
| 1,000 | 10 | 30 |
| 1,500 | 15 | 45 |
| 2,000 | 20 | 60 |
| 3,000 | 30 | 90 |

**What a job costs at different prices per square, for 20.7 squares**

| Price per square | Total |
| --- | --- |
| $350 | $7,245.00 |
| $450 | $9,315.00 |
| $550 | $11,385.00 |
| $700 | $14,490.00 |

## Worked example: a 2,068 sq ft roof, and a flat 24 × 30 ft plane

1. Area: 2,068.36 sq ft ÷ 100 = 20.68 squares, billed as 20.7.
2. Bundles without waste: 20.68 × 3 = 63 (rounded up). With 10% waste: 69 bundles, or 23 squares.
3. Price at $475 a square: 20.7 × 475 = $9,832.50.
4. A flat plane of 24 × 30 ft is 720 sq ft = 7.2 squares, $3,420.00 at the same price.

## FAQ

### What is a roofing square?
A unit of roof area equal to 100 square feet. Roofers quote and order by the square, so a 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares.

### How do I convert square feet to roofing squares?
Divide by 100. 1,850 sq ft is 18.5 squares. To go the other way, multiply the squares by 100.

### Is the roof area the same as the floor area of the house?
No. A sloped roof has more surface than the footprint, so multiply the footprint by the slope factor for the pitch. A 6/12 roof is about 12% larger.

### How many bundles of shingles are in a square?
Three for most asphalt shingles. Some products come in a different number of bundles per square, so check the pack.

### Why is the billed figure rounded up?
Roofers price by the square and normally round up to the next tenth or whole square. Check how your contractor rounds when you compare quotes.

### What is a normal price per roofing square?
It varies a lot by region, by material and by how steep and complex the roof is. Enter the price from your own quotes. The table above shows how the total moves.
