# Invoice Template for Google Docs

> Download the invoice as a Word file, upload it to Google Drive, and open it with Google Docs. Or download the Excel file and open it with Google Sheets for automatic totals. It is a normal file you own, with no add-on to install. The steps below take about a minute.

## How it works

Google Docs and Google Sheets open Word and Excel files directly, so the template is a standard .docx or .xlsx file made in your browser. In the Sheets version the amounts and totals calculate with formulas: amount = quantity × rate, tax = subtotal × your rate, total = subtotal + tax, balance due = total − amount paid. In Docs you type the amounts yourself, as in Word.

**Opening the file in Google Docs or Sheets**

| You downloaded | Open it with | Totals calculate? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Word (.docx) | Google Docs | No, type the amounts |
| Excel (.xlsx) | Google Sheets | Yes, with formulas |
| Either file | Download as PDF from Docs or Sheets | Same as the file you opened |

**Things that can look different after you open it**

| Item | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| Fonts | Google swaps a missing font for a similar one, so check the page once |
| Table widths | Drag a column edge in Docs if a column looks narrow |
| Currency symbol | Sheets keeps the number format, so the symbol stays |
| Page size | Check File, then Page setup, if you need Letter or A4 |

## FAQ

### Is there a Google Docs invoice template I can use?
Yes. This page makes a Word file that Google Docs opens, and an Excel file that Google Sheets opens. You upload it to your own Drive, so it is yours and nothing is shared with us.

### How do I open a Word file in Google Docs?
Upload the file to Google Drive, right click it, choose Open with, then Google Docs. Docs makes an editable Google Doc from it.

### How do I get automatic totals in Google Sheets?
Download the Excel file and open it with Google Sheets. Type a quantity and a rate and the amounts, tax and balance calculate by themselves.

### How do I send the invoice as a PDF from Google Docs?
Choose File, then Download, then PDF document. You can also share the Google Doc by link, but a PDF is cleaner for a client.

### Do I need a Google account?
Yes, a free Google account to use Docs, Sheets and Drive. The template file itself works without one in Word or Excel.

### Why not a Google Docs link to copy?
A shared link means the file sits in someone else's account. A downloaded file is private to you, which is why this page works with a download and an upload.
